The Local Scoop

The largest of the four lakes that were created by the Nantahala Power & Light Co. in the early 50's, Bear Creek Lake still offers a peaceful and remote feel. Take your boat down to the wide concrete boat ramp accessible to the public or stay on the small beach area for a swim to enjoy the cold mountain water and fresh air offered here. To access the small beach area look for the road to the right (gated) at the beginning of the parking area. Walk down this road to access the small beach. The East Fork of the Tuckasegee River flows through this lake and dam area to where it meets the West Fork down in the town of Tuckasegee. We suggest taking your fishing equipment along with you especially if you plan on boating. You'll have a great opportunity to catch Brook, Brown & Rainbow Trout along with the chance at a few Small/Large Mouth Bass. This lake is Hatchery Supported and is stocked with approx. 5,000 trout each year between March and June. Make sure you have your valid N.C. Wildlife Fishing license before you try your luck. Purchase one at any of the fine establishments we have listed here on our site. Or if it's water sports you enjoy, this lake is perfect for beginners or those looking to go "all out."  The privacy you'll find here offers safety and relaxation to all who can find this little gem.

Local Directions

From Tuckasegee, NC access N.C. Hwy-281 South/"Canada Road" from N.C. Hwy-107 South (just outside of Sylva, NC). Continue on Hwy-281 S for 4.1 miles to "Bear Lake Road" on your Right. Then another 0.7 miles unitl you reach the lake.
