  •  (3) charcoal grills
  •  short trail to the river
  •  Large meadow

The Local Scoop

This is a very convenient picnic area if traveling along this section of the "Mountain Waters Scenic Byway." Plan on stopping here for a quick picnic with the family before heading up to Highlands from Frankln or vise versa. It is a short walk to the picnic talbe and would be easy to tote a cooler and other supplies.  The last time I was here, a couple of the grills had a good bit of rust build-up on them so if you plan on grilling you will need plenty of aluminum foil or just bring your own.  There is a short access trail to the river from the picnic area and a large meadow beside the tables.  This is a nice setting for a quick snack or a full meal.

The Local Directions

From intersection of U.S. Hwy-64 E and U.S. Hwy-23/441 North in Franklin take Hwy-64 East towards Highlands, NC for approx. 9.2 miles to a roadside pull-off on your Right. There is a small, brown "P" sign for "Picnic". You'll notice a long meadow along the roadside before you get to the pull-off. The picnic tables are below the road on the far end of the meadow. If coming from Highlands, take U.S. 64 West from red light @ intersection of U.S. 64/N.C. 28 in Highlands for 7.4 miles to Parking on your Left.
