When you are in Highlands, NC or Cashiers, NC and you are looking for a historic site to visit with your family, consider Grimshawes Post Office. This very old structure still stands and in it's day was the smallest post office in the country. It was operational from way back in 1903 and functioned for 50 years until 1953. There is easy access just off of Whiteside Cove Road. Simply pull off onto the shoulder and take your pictures and have a look in the small structure.
We also recommend visiting nearby "Cashiers Sliding Rock" in the summer months, especially if you have children with you. It's a great place for a swim.
For some more historic adventure visit the nearby "Bob Padgett Poplar." This enormous "old growth" Yellow Poplar is one of the biggest in the U.S. You can find it off of Rich Gap Road via Horse Cove Road just South of Highlands, NC.

From the main intersection of U.S. Highway 64 and N.C. Highway 107 in Cashiers, NC take N.C. Highway 107 South for approx. 1.7 miles to Whitside Cove Road on your right. Stay on this road for 3.9 miles until you reach the very small Grimshawes Post Office building on your right.

From the main intersection of U.S. Highway 64 and N.C. Highway 28 (on Main Street) in Highlands, NC travel East onto "Horse Cove Road," passing "Mountain Fresh Grocery" on your right. This road takes you down off of the Highlands plateau via sharp curves. You'll travel 4.5 miles from Highlands, NC to where you'll see a fork in the road. To your right is "Bull Pen Road," and to your left is 'Whiteside Cove Road." Take the left onto Whiteside Cove Rd. for another 3.7 miles to "Grimshawes" on your left.
