The Little Tennessee River Greenway is a trail crafted from old canals, abandoned rail beds and riverbanks. Voluntary local strategy promotes public access to Little Tennessee with the creation of riverside parks and trails.

For a lengthier trek visit Whiterock Mountain via Bartram Trail. This 4 ¹/₂ mile trail is located between Franklin and Highlands. Finding the trailhead may be a little tricky, but if you follow the yellow-blazed Bartram Trail until you see the markers for the blue-blazed trail on your left, you will be rewarded with the breathtaking view of the Tennessee Valley and the Nantahala Mountains. For more impressive views travel up the 4 mile Wesser Bald Observation Tower. Converted from a fire tower to an observation point after the tower burned down, this hike employs the Appalachian Trail to give hikers access to a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. 

There is something magical about seeing the land while on horseback. Just west of Franklin are four trails adjacent to the Hurricane Primitive Campground. Each of these trails range from 3.5 to 8 miles in length and offer unforgettable views of the Nantahala National Forest. The Hurricane Creek Horse Camp is equipped to stable your horses overnight and if you don't own a horse local stables can provide you with one for a nominal fee. 

Cycling has taken the mountains of western North Carolina by storm. Each year more and more people take to the streets on their motorcycles and bicycles. Only an hour away from Franklin Motorcyclists can brave the Tail of the Dragon a stretch of road featuring 318 curves in only 11 miles! Mountain bike trails and road bike routes are also located throughout the area with trails/routes ranging from easy to advanced. 

Franklin is known as the "Gem Capital of the World" and mining dates back to 1870 in Macon County. Every year hundreds of tourists visit Franklin NC Gem Mines each year to try their luck at finding some of the best gems in the area. Visit the Cherokee Ruby & Sapphire Mine to look for native North Carolinian gemstones or the Gold City Gem Mine with their covered flumes to mine regardless of rain or shine.
